CHALLENGE

A plant moving an average of 2,100 tons per month was shipping 250-300 tons of loose mixed material local to be baled versus segregating and baling it in-house. Wilmington Paper determined that revenue was being left on the table.

WILMINGTON PAPER RECOMMENDATIONS

Working with the plant management team, Wilmington Paper personnel instituted procedures to ensure that each area of the facility segregates scrap properly and bales the material in-house, ensuring that the plant is segregating all SUS, BBC, Unprinted, LP, HP & Poly SBS at each generation point allowing for mill-direct shipments.


THE PROGRAM RESULTS

The facility segregated the material at each generation point allowing for mill direct shipments and thus increased revenue. The material was baled in-house which created secure bales with good integrity versus shipping the material loose to be baled by a third party.

CHALLENGE

Scrap material that could be Mill-Direct is being loaded onto local trucks as per the plant's processes, preventing a higher percentage of scrap being directed to Mill-Direct shipments thus resulting in lower overall return for scrap.

Working with the plant personnel and management on process improvements, Wilmington Paper implemented a  more specific grading system on scrap materials and more exact shipping procedures to maximize Mill-Direct shipments.


THE PROGRAM RESULTS

The plant increases the percentage of Mill-Direct shipments of scrap, creating a significant monthly revenue enhancement.


THE NUMBERS

The plant increased the percentage of Mill-Direct shipments from 15% at the beginning of the year to well over 50% by mid-year, allowing for a higher overall return for scrap material.
